Obviously there was wire going to each valve in the original trench.

There was no manifold - just 10 valves around the yard (9 zones plus master). For each zone a line was teed off the main line to a valve at the zone and then piped from that valve to each zone. From master valve, one 3/4 pvc line run around the entire perimeter of the yard with some cutting across. Third - controller and master valve with spread out valves. No additional valves beyond those as the manifold. Each manifold piped out to a zone so there was a LOT of pipe, but the only wires were from the box to the manifold directly below it. Second - six way manifold with a master valve.

It was a huge yard also but front and back with lots of beds, trees, etc. It was a LOT of hardware, wiring, piping, etc. The 4 way manifold fed 4 sections that each had 2 or 3 additional valve boxes controlling those zones. The three ways I've seen it done on my place:įirst - controller with a master valve to a 4 way manifold. I'll have to get under the sidewalk but that will be my only real challenge. I'm going to do this one myself and will only be the front yard which is about 1/3 of an acre and one giant rectangle with a sidewalk cutting across.

I'm curious as to what is considered "best practice" for proper install given each sprinkler products company seems to tout different ways.

Again, this fitting should be flat on the ground and face the direction the sprinkler system pipe will go in.I've owned 3 houses with "professionally" installed sprinkler systems and each one was quite different. Step 10 - Attach 90 Degree Elbow FittingĪt the end of the last piece of 3 inch PVC pipe (that is connected to the last T-fitting), attach and glue the 90-degree elbow fitting. Connect the other two T-fittings to the first one in the same manner. When attaching the fitting, make sure that the T-fitting lies flat on the ground and is facing in the direction where you'll run in the new sprinkler pipeline. Then use PVC glue to attach the first T-fitting to the coupler pipe. Place the first T-fitting into the manifold installation hole, and clean the 12 inch PVC coupling pipe and the other end of the T-fitting. After the PVC primer dries, attach one of the pieces of pipe to one end of each T-fitting. Use PVC primer on all three of the T-fitting connector and pieces of 3 inch PVC pipe. Step 7 - Connect Coupling Pipe to ValveĬlean the end of the 1-foot section of the coupling pipe and then connect it to the butterfly valve with PVC glue. Use PVC glue to connect the butterfly valve to the main water supply pipe. Step 6 - Connect Butterfly Valve to Main Water Supply Make it wide enough so you can insert the 1-foot piece of 3 inch PVC pipe. Use the shovel to dig a trench that is the same depth as the two holes you dug earlier. Dig in another hole about the same size as you did for the manifold installation. Step 4 - Dig Hole for Butterfly ValveĬhoose a spot that is about halfway between the manifold installation hole in the pipe where you'll be connecting the manifold sitting valve. Dig the hole about 12 to 15 inches deep, and make it about 2 feet square. Then, dig a hole for the manifold installation.

Step 3 - Dig Manifold HoleĬhoose a spot 2 feet away from the outlet pipe that will supply water to your sprinkler system. Allow the primer to dry for about 15 to 30 minutes before continuing.

Clean the end of the pipe where the butterfly valve will be attached. Take the butterfly valve and use PVC primer to clean the ends of the fitting. Step 2 - Clean and Prepare Connec tion Fittings If you have dedicated isolation installed for your sprinkler system, shut off the water by closing that valve. If the irrigation system for your lawn will be connected to the main water supply pipe, turn off the main water valve that is located at the water meter.
